Highlands Journey

Departing from Colombo, the journey toward Nuwara Eliya begins with a scenic drive inland through Sri Lanka’s cultural heartland. En route, a rewarding stop at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage offers the chance to witness elephants bathing and roaming along the river. The route then ascends through the historic Kadugannawa mountain pass, where panoramic views open across lush valleys and distant hills. Approaching Kandy, the landscape unfolds toward the scenic Hanthana mountain range before arriving in the hill capital, where visitors may explore the sacred Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic beside the tranquil Kandy Lake, the spiritual heart of Sri Lankan Buddhism.

From Kandy, the route proceeds toward Gampola to visit the unique Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex, where those who climb the iconic spiral tower are rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. The road then ascends through misty hills and lush tea plantations, with a refreshing stop at Ramboda Falls and an optional visit to a tea factory to experience the making of world-famous Ceylon Tea.

The final stretch winds through the cool tea country before arriving in Nuwara Eliya, known as “Little England,” where visitors can relax by Gregory Lake and enjoy the charming colonial atmosphere of Sri Lanka’s hill-country retreat.

Starting early from Nuwara Eliya, the journey heads through misty tea estates toward Horton Plains National Park for the famous World’s End trek. The scenic 9 km circular trail passes open grasslands and cloud forest, reaching the dramatic 870-meter World’s End escarpment, followed by Mini World’s End and the picturesque Baker’s Falls before returning to town by late morning.

In the afternoon, optional excursions can include a visit to the beautiful Hakgala Botanical Gardens, set beneath dramatic mountain scenery, or a short drive to Ambewela Farm and the nearby New Zealand Farm, known for sweeping pastureland views of the central highlands.

Along the route and around town, travelers can enjoy viewpoints over rolling tea plantations and the cool colonial atmosphere of Nuwara Eliya.

The evening is best spent relaxing around Gregory Lake with its serene mountain setting, or enjoying dinner and drinks at one of Nuwara Eliya’s charming town pubs, restaurants, or heritage hotels.

Departing early morning from Nuwara Eliya, the journey descends from the cool central highlands through winding tea plantation landscapes and misty mountain passes, passing scenic viewpoints and waterfalls along the Ramboda valley.

The route continues toward Kitulgala, a lush rainforest region on the banks of the Kelani River, famous for its natural beauty and adventure activities. Here, travelers may choose to experience white-water rafting, or optionally enjoy a refreshing river bath, or relax with a riverside lunch while taking in the jungle surroundings.

After Kitulgala, the journey proceeds through the scenic Kelani Valley countryside via Ruwanwella, passing small towns, rubber plantations, and tropical forest landscapes before gradually reaching the coastal plains and arriving in Colombo.
