Tour Overview
This journey follows the legendary footsteps of the Ramayana, exploring the landscapes of Sri Lanka believed to be connected to the kingdom of Ravana, the search of Hanuman, and the captivity and redemption of Sita.
Beginning in Sri Lanka’s cultural heartland, the journey travels to the ancient rock citadel of Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a dramatic landscape long associated in tradition with Ravana’s kingdom. From there, the route continues to the sacred hill capital of Kandy, before ascending through lush tea plantations to Ramboda, where the Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple marks the legendary arrival point of Hanuman during his search across Lanka.
The trail then reaches the cool highlands of Nuwara Eliya, where the revered Seetha Amman Temple is believed to stand at the site of Ashoka Vatika, where Sita was held captive. Continuing south into the misty mountains of Ella, travelers visit the legendary Ravana Cave and the dramatic Ravana Falls, locations traditionally associated with Ravana’s hidden cave networks.
Before returning to Colombo, the journey concludes at Divurumpola Temple, believed to be the sacred site where Sita proved her purity through the Agni Pariksha.

Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport. Meet your guide and transfer to Colombo / Negombo. Check into your hotel and relax. Evening walk to the beach and enjoy fresh seafood dinner at a local restaurant.

Depart Colombo and journey inland through coconut estates, open paddy fields, and evolving rural landscapes, with striking views of the Kurunegala rock outcrops rising dramatically from the plains and natural opportunities for relaxed roadside photography along the way.
Continuing toward the Cultural Triangle, the scenery gradually transitions into Sri Lanka’s dry zone, where reservoirs, forest patches, and traditional village life define the landscape.
On arrival in Dambulla, enjoy a brief and easy visit to the Cave Temple area, taking in its unique setting beneath towering rock formations. As the day cools, experience a gentle evening climb of Dambulla Rock, rewarded with sweeping sunset views over lakes, forests, and distant mountain ranges.
After the climb, proceed to Sigiriya for overnight stay, surrounded by tranquil jungle ambience and distant views of the iconic rock fortress as the sun sets.

Depart Sigiriya in the morning and travel south through the Matale region, visiting Nalanda Gedige and Aluvihare Rock Temple, and set against tea estates and hill-country forests. Continue toward Matale with an optional spice garden visit near the outskirts, check in to the hotel and rest, then spend time shopping around Kandy city, including local handicrafts, gems, batiks, and souvenir streets near the lake. In the evening, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic for pooja, followed by a Kandy Cultural Dance Show, before returning to the hotel for overnight stay.

Depart Kandy in the morning and travel toward the hill country with an early stop at Ambuluwawa Tower, where a short climb rewards visitors with spectacular 360-degree views of Sri Lanka’s central mountains. Continue the scenic drive through the Ramboda Pass, stopping at the dramatic Ramboda Falls and the sacred Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple, an important site linked to the Ramayana trail.
The journey then continues through rolling tea estates to visit a traditional tea factory such as Labookellie Tea Factory or Mackwoods Labookellie Tea Centre, where guests enjoy a guided walk through the tea-making process followed by fresh Ceylon tea tasting. Arrive in Nuwara Eliya for lunch at a local restaurant or colonial-style hotel, sampling the flavours of Sri Lanka’s hill-country cuisine.
In the evening, enjoy a relaxing stroll through Victoria Park or nearby flower gardens before checking in to the hotel. Spend the cool evening around Gregory Lake, enjoying lakeside walks, cafés, optional boat rides, and the relaxed atmosphere of Nuwara Eliya town before overnight stay.

Begin the morning in Nuwara Eliya with a visit to the sacred Seetha Amman Temple, revered as the location of Ashoka Vatika in the Ramayana, where Sita is believed to have been held captive by Ravana. Nearby streams and rock formations are traditionally associated with episodes from the epic.
Continue to the nearby Hakgala Botanical Garden, believed in legend to be part of Ravana’s royal pleasure gardens, where visitors can explore its beautiful rose gardens, orchids, and cool-climate mountain flora. A short stop follows at Pedro Tea Estate to experience the production of Sri Lanka’s famous high-grown Ceylon tea, including a guided walk through tea processing and tasting.
Depart Nuwara Eliya late morning and descend through scenic tea estates and forested mountain slopes toward Ella, enjoying panoramic views through the Ella Gap with photo stops along the way, including the dramatic Ravana Falls, traditionally linked to the legend of Ravana.
Arrive in Ella by afternoon for hotel check-in. Later, visitors may explore the town or visit Ravana Cave, believed in local tradition to have been part of Ravana’s ancient cave network. The evening is free to relax in Ella’s cool mountain atmosphere before overnight stay.

Depart Ella in the morning and travel through the scenic hill country toward Welimada, stopping at the sacred Divurumpola Temple. According to the Ramayana, this revered site is believed to be the place where Sita proved her purity through the Agni Pariksha after being rescued from Ravana.
The journey then descends from the cool highlands through Bandarawela and Wellawaya, where the landscape gradually changes from misty tea estates to the warmer southern plains. Continue toward Udawalawa before joining the Southern Expressway for a comfortable drive toward Colombo.
Along the way, guests may choose to take a brief exit to visit the historic coastal city of Galle, where a walk through the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort offers colonial architecture, ocean views, cafés, and boutique shops before continuing the journey back to Colombo.
Arrival in Colombo by evening concludes the Ramayana Highlands journey through Sri Lanka’s legendary landscapes.
